Sheridan Brings 'Both Sides Now' to Library Concert Series

Local vocalist Suzanne Sheridan will perform Both Sides Now, a musical tribute to Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, as part of the Wilton Library's Connecticut's Own Sunday concert series from 4 to 5 p.m. March 21. Advanced registration for the free concert is suggested.

Joni Mitchell's hits include Both Sides Now and Big Yellow Taxi. Cohen's most well-known songs include Suzanne and Anthem.

The singer/songwriter performs regularly with the Exit 43 band and also in area theaters and churches. Sheridan has received honors in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Pre-registrants must arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating. After 3:50, walk-ins and those waitlisted will be seated if space allows.

Check Smoke Alarm Batteries With Time Change

In conjunction with the nationwide campaign "Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries," the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages everyone to check their smoke alarms and change the battery if needed, or at least once per year.

In a recent press release, the association reports that more than 66 percent of home fire deaths that occurred between 2003-2006 were in homes without a working smoke alarm. A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.

A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you're awake or asleep, a working smoke alarm is constantly on alert, scanning the air for fire and smoke. Smoke alarms must be maintained! A smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as having no smoke alarm at all, so test your smoke alarm monthly by pushing the "test" button, if it has one, urge NFPA officials.

It is important to know, NFPA notes, that smoke alarms are powered by either a battery or are hardwired into your home's electrical system. Hardwired smoke alarms are usually equipped with a backup battery. If your smoke alarm is powered by battery, the battery needs to be replaced annually unless it is a long-life battery (check the owner's manual). All batteries should be maintained and replaced in accordance with manufacturer's guidance.

The U.S. Fire Administration has a fire safety campaign called Install. Inspect. Protect., which provides information about home smoke alarms and fire sprinklers. Visit the campaign Web site at www.usfa.dhs.gov/campaigns/smokealarms/.

Library Seeks Donations for Annual Book Sale

The Wilton Library is calling for donations of gently used books, CDs, videos and DVDs for its annual book sale. The sale will be held April 10th - 13th. Please leave donations in the gray bins outside the Library on Godfrey Place by Mar. 20.

The sale is a major fundraiser for the library and will provide affordable reading and viewing material for those dealing with economic hardship.

National Weather Service: Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Fairfield County from Saturday to Sunday morning.

An incoming storm could drop as much as four inches of rain on the area during the period, affecting roadways, businesses and homes.

The Greater Danbury Ancient Order of Hibernians 17^th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14. (A rain date is likely so check back.)

The route begins in the area of Kennedy Street off North Main, turning right onto West St. through to Lake Ave. and up to the new hall. To map it, click here. At the finish, parade-goers will find free beer and hot dogs; corned beef cabbages will be served to the much-deserving marchers.

Wednesday, March 17

The Wilton Library offers drop-in St. Patrick's Day crafts during regular library hours, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 17. Children of all ages are invited to make a craft to take home. No registration is necessary; the crafting is made possible by the Coyle Family Young Readers Fund. Free

Children can also join Wilton Library assistant Ms. Keogh as she shares some of her favorite Irish tales from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Kids are sure to love these Irish trickster tales of leprechauns, giants and more. Grades one and up are welcome with a caregiver in the building. No registration is necessary. Free

The Schoolhouse Restaurant greets St. Patrick's Day, Wednesday, March 17, with a special dinner paired with Irish beer and whiskey tastings, along with "contemporary riffs" on Irish classics. The evening is priced at $75 per person.

Georgetown Saloon patrons will no doubt hoist a few green ones to cheer on St. Patrick, while dining on appropriate dinner specials and tapping their toes to traditional Irish tunes by local shamrockers Bill Devlin, Nora Hanley, Andrew Carey. Cheer - responsibly - to leprechauns with Bailey's green beer, Jameson drink specials and more.

Georgetown's Lumberyard Pub gets foot-stompin' with Keltic Kick from 7 p.m. to closing Wednesday, March 17. Look for green beer, free food, and the return of the pub's Bavarian beer maids.
