The Wilton boys basketball team partied like it was 1999.

Chris Nugent scored 20 points as the Warriors defeated Danbury 66-60 on Friday to clinch their first berth in the state tournament since the 1999-2000 season.

Wilton improved to 8-8 overall and 6-8 in the FCIAC with four games remaining in the regular season.

Weston Wilbur added 17 points for the Warriors, who already have quadrupled last season's win total when they finished 2-18.

With a chance to clinch a state tourney berth at home, the Warriors came out fired up Friday and jumped to a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. Wilton extended its lead to 25-13 at halftime.

Danbury outscored the Warriors 22-14 in the third period to close within 39-35, but Wilton held on by outscoring Danbury 27-25 in a fast-paced final period.

Eric Houska scored 14 points and Ian Ross added 13, giving Wilton four players in double figures.

Dany Joel Harris scored 20 points and T.J. Jackson added 18 for Danbury, which dropped to 9-7 and 7-7.

The Danbury girls basketball team remained undefeated by holding off Wilton 64-58 on Friday, giving coach Jackie DiNardo her 400th career victory.

Rachel Gartner scored 22 points and Casey Smith added 20 for the Hatters, who improved to 18-0 and 16-0.

It wasn't easy, however, as Danbury had to fight off Wilton's rally in the fourth quarter. Trailing 46-35 entering the fourth quarter, the Warriors outscored the Hatters 23-18 over the final eight minutes.

Maddy Fulton scored 19 points and Casey Pearsall added 13 for Wilton, which dropped to 11-6 overall and 11-5 in the FCIAC with two games left in the regular season.

Alyssa Malvanosa added 10 points for Wilton, which has lost three of its last four games and still has not clinched an FCIAC playoff spot.

However, Wilton still has a two-game edge over Darien and Staples, who are tied for ninth at 9-7, and can get in by winning one of its two remaining games.

Wilton hosts Trinity Catholic on Monday (7 p.m.). The Warriors still haven't officially clinched because they would lose tiebreakers to Darien and Staples, who each beat Wilton.
