A puppy is put to sleep after contracting canine parvovirus, leaving a family at a loss and a business owner under quarantine.
A Wilton family is grief-stricken and burdened with high medical costs following the death of their newly purchased dog, Oprah. But Christine DiCarlo, the woman who sold them the pet, believes the situation could have been prevented. Victor and Cheryl Muniz purchased the teacup Yorkshire Terrier from Dicarlo's store, True Breeders, in Branchville on Sunday, Feb. 28. By Friday, the puppy had been put to sleep, unable to recover from a severe case of canine parvovirus. "By Friday morning, it was obvious that she wasn't getting any better," Victor Muniz said after bringing the puppy to a 24-hour emergency pet care center in Norwalk on Wednesday of last week. "Her blood cells were extremely low and she'd developed a high fever and they called …

The store was shut for at least a two-week period by the State Department of Agriculture on March 5.
True Breeders, the pet store that opened in Branchville in January, is under quarantine by order of the State Department of Agriculture after a puppy sold there died from parvovirus. The quarantine began on March 5, said Raymond Connors, supervisor of the State Animal Control Division of the agriculture department, and will be lifted by March 15 if there are no more incidents of the virus there. Store owner Christine DiCarlo said on Monday that the dog that died was a teacup yorkie who came from the Hunte Corporation in Missouri and had no contact with any of the 13 other dogs at the store. "This is not sad, this is devastating. This is beyond sad," DiCarlo said of the puppy's death. According to Connors, a department animal control …

Planning and Zoning holds another public hearing for a pending package store special permit in Wilton.
If things continue apace, pretty soon Wilton will have its own six pack...of package stores. The Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing for a special permit application to open a liquor store at 941 Danbury Road. The proposed business, Wilton Wine & Spirits, is the fourth such store to come before the committee since the town voted to amend its charter in November of last year and allow liquor sales in town. "My only thought here is that we went through increasingly reduced questioning beginning with the first [store] and going down since," said commissioner Mike Rudolph. "Is there any way to include the restrictions that we have for the other liquor stores?" The restrictions Rudolph was referring to include limitations on …

Step inside Chris Kydes' diminutive, red corn crib to see how he restitches, resoles, reuses and recycles shoes, and in such a small space.
From the outside, passers-by often wonder how the tiny, red, former corn crib can house the equipment necessary to repair Wiltonians' shoes. The Wilton Shoemaker owner Chris Kydes jokes that the shop is twice as big inside as it is outside.Though the space is still tiny, the cobbler believes that having windows on all four sides keeps him from going stir-crazy.Inside, he has equipment for everything from cutting leather to plugging cork into broken soles before resurfacing. And Kydes doesn't always work alone. As often as not, his son can be found at his side - learning the trade as Chris did from his father in Great Barrington, Mass. some 40 years ago.The question he's asked most often is, "can it be fixed?" The answer is almost always …

Biannual pay raises and increased company contributions to health insurance and pension fund won in collective bargaining.
NEW HAVEN — In a pep rally atmosphere Sunday morning, an elated Brian Petronella, president of Local 371 of the United of Food and Commercial Workers union, shouted out the results of contract negotiations completed yesterday with Stop & Shop supermarkets. With about 275 union members attending a contract ratification or rejection meeting in the Omni Hotel, Petronella listed the highlights of what he called a "great contract," including, for fulltime employees, an immediate $750 bonus, a $10 per week pay increase beginning August 1, and increased payments by the company to the union's health insurance policies and pension fund. Employees will receive subsequent pay increases over the course of the three-year contract and partners of …

Analysts find more multi-family housing and retail service businesses are needed on that corridor.
Six months into a study of the Route 7 corridor between Norwalk and Danbury, analysts Monday night reported on existing conditions there and on their intent to recommend both traffic flow improvements and community-tailored development. The study, intended to create a plan for the corridor that should be implemented by 2030, is scheduled to be completed in March 2011. It's sponsored by the South Western Regional Planning Agency and the Housatonic Valley Council of Elected Officials. Project manager Craig Lader of SWRPA said the study will cost about $375,000, 80 percent of which will be funded by the federal government and 20 percent by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. Lader noted that neither of the sponsoring organizations …

Five-plus years, $178 million to restore 23 locations.
NORWALK — Ever imagine visiting the service plazas on interstates 95 and 395 as destinations that appeal to travelers and local residents alike, offering a mini-mall experience with attractive restaurants and shops? No? The state says you should know that a North Haven company is about to demolish, redesign and rebuild the 13 plazas on the interstates, and extensively refurbish the 10 plazas along the Merritt and Wilbur Cross parkways, which comprise Route 15. The plazas are in "deplorable condition and getting worse," said Paul Landino, president of Project Service LLC, during a presentation Thursday before the South Western Region Metropolitan Planning Organization. Speaking at the organization's February meeting in the Norwalk Transit …

A few months after construction on Route 7 is completed, how is business along the town's busiest road?
Though construction along the Route 7 corridor has been complete for months and cars are speeding through town, business along Wilton's main thoroughfare is still slow. Owners and workers alike report slow days and low sales receipts and have a few ideas as to what is going wrong. It could be that Wiltonians are stuck in a routine they've developed to avoid Danbury Road or perhaps, as suggested by more than one business owner, they don't even realize that the construction is complete. Rick Racaj manages Leah's Grille, formerly Sky Bar & Grill. He said that business has definitely improved since the construction ended but receipts are still down. "It was really hard during the construction. The sidewalks were torn up and construction cones …

Reuters reports that new home construction in the U.S. is the highest it has been in six months.
Michael Strauss is the chief economist at Commonfund in Wilton and, according to him, the economy "gets no respect" but is "doing significantly better" of late. In a Reuters article that highlights encouraging data in the housing and industrial sectors, Strauss is quoted as saying recent indicators show the national economy heading in a good direction. Strauss' comments come as new home construction numbers hit a six-month high in January and with the Federal Reserve reporting national industrial production up by 0.9 percent. The News-Times reports a large acquisition involving a Wilton resident.
Lower Fairfield County is already home to some outstanding lacrosse programs. Now, it may well be the home of one of the largest online equipment retailers for the sport. The News-Times is reporting that Wilton resident John Arrix has parternered with New Jersey financier George West to buy Lax.com, an ecommerce Web site that sells lacrosse equipment to the tune of around $4 million annually, or 40 percent of the $100 million industry's $10 million online market. Arrix said he has plans to move the business from its New Jersey location to somewhere in Fairfield County when the building's lease expires. Read the full story: Wilton Resident Nets Lax.com.
