During the month of October, the images most people conjure up are ghoulish uprisings, dark foreboding nights, zombies and… dancing??!??! At Wilton Library on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. the third annual Thrill the World simultaneous dance event will take place. This is an infectious, fun time when dancers, zombies, the great undead gather together to dance to Michael Jackson’s Thriller, at the very same time around the globe. This is the third year that Wilton Library and the Wilton Family Y will partner together to promote fun, exercise and a good time for enthusiasts ages 10 to 110. A reception with healthy snacks will immediately follow the dance. The event is at 2 p.m. sharp on the same afternoon as the Wilton Chamber of Commerce’s Halloween parade. Weather permitting, organizers are planning to hold the dance outside on the library’s portico while the parade is passing by, otherwise the dance will be held in the Brubeck Room.
According to Susan Lauricella, Head of Teen Services at the library, “This is the third year we’re doing this and we’re looking forward to it. Last year our best laid plans were thwarted by a snowstorm, of all things! But that didn’t deter a hearty bunch of ghouls who came out the next night and danced their feet off.” The six-minute song and dance moves are easily learned during a two-hour rehearsal, taught by the Y’s Amy Rogell. Four rehearsals are scheduled before the big event; participants must attend at least one of the rehearsals to ensure that everyone is doing the same steps simultaneously. The rehearsals will be held as follows: Saturday, Oct. 20, 2 –
4 p.m. at Wilton Family Y; Sunday, Oct. 21, 2 – 4 p.m. at the Y; Monday, Oct. 22, 6 – 8 p.m. at Wilton Library; Wednesday, Oct. 24, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the library.
Ms. Lauricella continued, “Even though we may be performing outside, we still have to plan for being in the Brubeck Room where we can only take a finite number of people, so dancers are encouraged to sign up soon.”
Participants are encouraged to join with friends — dancers and non-dancers alike. Because this is a worldwide simultaneous event, attendees need to be registered in advance and counted. People can register through the library’s website at www.wiltonlibrary.org and
click on the link on the homepage. Only one registration per person is needed on the October 27 date. People can choose to come to whichever rehearsal they want, as long as they attend at least one. People are welcome to come to all four if they wish to get in more practice time with the dance moves. There is a one-time $5 fee to offset the costs payable at the first rehearsal attended.
