Members Norwalk River Rowing Association's (NRRA) Youth Racing Team are participating in an Ergathon on Saturday, September 21st to raise money for the Matthew Zucker Memorial Fund. Barbara and Mark Zucker established this fund in memory of their son Matthew, an avid rower and NRRA athlete, who lost his battle with brain cancer just before his high school graduation in 1998.
The Matthew Zucker Memorial Fund enables NRRA, a 501(c)(3) organization, to fulfill its unique mission of providing scholarships to young people who otherwise could not afford to learn to row or to discover the same self-confidence, self-discipline and love of rowing that Matthew did.
For the past 15 years, members of NRRA's youth racing have raised money for the fund by means of an Ergathon whereby each athlete rows ten kilometers (10,000 meters) on an erg machine and receives donations for their efforts. The NRRA rowers' goal is to row a combined 1 million meters. To date, the Ergathon has enabled the Matthew Zucker Memorial Fund to support more than 60 rowing scholarships for NRRA youth. In addition to the Ergathon, the day will feature a bake sale the proceeds of which go toward equipment purchases.
This year’s “Ergathon” will be held at three locations from 9am to 2pm: Darien Sport Shop – 1127 Post Road in Darien, Stop and Shop – 380 Main Ave in Norwalk, and Stop and Shop - 5 River Road in Wilton. Donations can be made at any of these locations during the Ergathon or by donating online at http://www.norwalkriverrowing.org
