Wilton Democratic Town Committee Elects Thomas C. Dec as Chair

In advance of the Annual Caucus, which will be held on July 17, 2013, Wilton Democratic Town Committee (WDTC) members met at the regularly scheduled monthly meeting to address various agenda items, which included holding an election to fill the unexpired term of the former Wilton DTC Chair.

While several people had expressed interest in the position and there was the possibility of nominations being made from the floor, the meeting opened with Thomas C. Dec as the only declared candidate.

Following the nomination of Dec, which was made by WDTC member and Nominating Committee Chair Paul Burnham and seconded by WDTC member and Wilton Selectman Ted Hoffstatter, Dec was elected unanimously to fill the current unexpired term of Wilton Democratic Town Committee Chair through January 2014.

A 2013 graduate of Yale University, Dec now has the distinction of being the youngest Chair of either Town Committee in Wilton history. But his decision to pursue this course is the result of his long involvement with the political process.

Dec began working for the presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama while a student at Wilton High School. In October 2007, he traveled to Des Moines, Iowa where he met with Barack Obama and other high school leaders from across the country to help steer the student arm of Obama for America. Dec also worked on the campaigns of Congressman Jim Himes and Stamford mayoral candidate David Martin. In 2008, he attended the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado as a guest and in 2012 was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, the youngest man in the delegation.

As WDTC Chair, Dec wants to lead the implementation of a strategic plan that will increase Democratic victories at the local and state level. “Wilton Democrats can point to a number of successes in recent years,” notes Dec “and we will be working to build upon that foundation with an unprecedented level of engagement with residents in town.”

Democratic leadership in Hartford offered their congratulations and support. “We congratulate Tom on his recent election to Chair and look forward to partnering with him to build on the momentum created by the Wilton Democrats over the past few years,” said Nancy DiNardo, Chair of the Connecticut Democratic State Central Committee. “Democratic candidates have won contested municipal elections in many of Wilton’s neighboring towns, and we see Wilton as an opportunity for the party into the future,” she added.

Given all that Tom Dec has accomplished already, members of the Wilton DTC are impressed by his commitment and look forward to working with him.
