From Corned Beef to Mardi Gras

From Guinness and corned beef to Mardi Gras, Beethoven and comedy, it's a "whale" of a weekend coming your way...

  • Where: Wilton Library (Brubeck Room), 137 Old Ridgefield Rd.
  • When: Saturday, 7:30-9:30 p.m. 
  • Why go: The film addresses what remains the racially segregated Mardi Gras carnivals since the first celebration in Mobile, Alabama, in 1703. …filmmaker Margaret Brown (Be Here to Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt), herself a daughter of Mobile, escorts us into the parallel hearts of the city's two carnivals,” the library notes.  A post-film discussion will be led by local documentary filmmaker Megan Smith-Harris.  For details click here.

Connecticut’s Own: Larry Shiller and Olga Gurevich

  • Where: Wilton Library, 137 Old Ridgefield Rd.
  • When: Sunday, 4-5 p.m.
  • Why go: Unwind with this performance of works by Beethoven, Brahms and Ravel. Larry Shiller, a Wilton resident, has performed previously in this series and with numerous symphonies. Olga Gurevich trained in Moscow and has performed in Russia and across Europe. For complete details on these esteemed musicians click here

St. Patrick’s Day Fare

St. Patrick’s Day Starts with an Irish Breakfast

  • When: Thursday, St. Patty’s Day
  • Why go: Get your green on with an Irish breakfast beginning at 8 a.m. The day’s menu will also include Corned Beef & Cabbage, Irish Stew and Beef & Guinness Pie. All-day drink specials will feature Guiness, Bailey’s, Irish Mist, Jameson & Michael Collins and Hooker Red on tap. The night’s open mic jam with Bruce, Barry and Peter will have an Irish flavor.

IMAX: "Alaska: Spirit of the Wild" and "Whales"

  • Where:The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, 10 North Water St., Norwalk
  • When: "Alaska" daily at 2 p.m. through April 7; "Whales" daily at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. through May 26
  • Why go: The viewing of wild places and wild faces doesn't get any better on film or even in person, necessarily. "Alaska" won an Oscar for Best Short Subject Documentary in 1998. In "Whales" you'll see many of these wondrous marine mammals lifesize! Make it a double feature.
  • Price: $9 for adults, $8 for seniors 65+ and $6.50 for children 2-12. Aquarium members receive $2 discounts. "Captains of Comedy"

  • When: Saturday, 6:30-10 p.m.
  • Why go: Laugh it up for a good cause with hot New York City comics right here in town. The night of comedy features Lenny Marcus, Jon Fisch and Pete Correale to benefit Brien McMahon High School’s NJROTC. The show begins at 8 p.m. and doors open for cocktails at 6:30.
