Give the Gift of a New Hobby for Father's Day

Looking for a unique gift for that special dad in your life? (After all, he probably has enough ties, cologne and golf balls to last him a lifetime.) Perhaps a new hobby might allow him and the kids to enjoy some quality time together.

Rocco Castango, owner of Heritage Hobbies at 33 Danbury Road, recommends model car and rocket kits, which fathers can spend time building with their sons and daughters.

"[These days] kids' attention spans are so short," Castango told Patch on Tuesday. "It's all about video games. But if you sit down, relax, do some painting and put these kits together, it's rewarding to see what you can do with your hands and your mind."

Castango, who took over Heritage Hobbies eight years ago, says that the Mustang, Audi and Ferrari kits are the most popular with younger customers looking to buy model car kits. These kits, depending on which one you choose, can take as little as 45 minutes to as long as a few nights to build. Model car kits cost between $16 and $28 each.

The rocket kits are also a big hit, according to Castango. They come in different sizes, colors and levels. A starter kit equipped with a launch pad, a controller and a rocket starts at just under $27, while the rockets themselves start at $10.

The store also sells train sets, kites and model airplanes, which are Castango's personal favorites. For more information about Heritage Hobbies, call 203-834-0441.
