Dave Brubeck Benefit: The Show Will Go On [UPDATE]

The life and music of the jazz icon will be celebrated in Waterbury tonight.

Update, Thursday 1:09 p.m.

The Brubeck family issued a statement on Dave Brubeck's Facebook page.

Brubeck Family Statement:
Our much loved and revered father, Dave Brubeck died of cardiac arrest today, December 5, 2012, one day before his 92nd birthday. He died peacefully with family present. The news spread before we even left Norwalk Hospital and our family is deeply appreciative of the phone calls, messages of condolence and continuing tributes in the media and those received personally, certainly a reflection back to us of Dave’s powerful and positive impact on the world. He specialized in long relationships; married to our mother for 70 years, had few changes of personnel in his outstanding quartets or in professional management and many of his fans became personal friends he knew for decades. We thank you all for your appreciation of him and the respect you have shown our family.

Original article:

Though originally planned to honor jazz legend Dave Brubeck's 92nd birthday, a celebration of the long-time Wilton resident's music is still scheduled to take place tonight in Waterbury, despite his unexpected death yesterday.

Born Dec. 6, 1920, Brubeck died of heart failure yesterday morning at Norwalk Hospital en route to a routine check-up with his cardiologist. He was 91.

Originally billed as "Dave Brubeck's 92nd Birthday Bash," tonight's concert was renamed "Thank You, Dave Brubeck" and will take place at the Palace Theater, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for $40.50, $53.50 or $80.50, depending on seating preference, and can be purchased through this website

"We are deeply saddened to hear of jazz legend Dave Brubeck’s unexpected passing this morning, one day short of his 92nd birthday celebration at the Palace," the Palace Theater's Facebook page reads. "As a 'thank you' to Dave for his ground-breaking contributions to the jazz community, tomorrow night’s 7:30pm concert, presented by his daughter Catherine’s charity Jazz’d For Life, will take place as scheduled."

According to the venue's website, saxophonist Richie Cannata and guitarist Bernie Williams (he of Yankee fame) will be joined by Jullio Fernandez, Eren Cannata, Joel Rosenblatt, Gene Perez, Chris Clark, Brad Mason, Fred Wallcott, Nicole Zuraitis, Gina Sicilia, Louise Baranger, Rachel Z, Omar Hakim, Ali Ryerson, Darius Brubeck, James Montgomery, Rich Lataille, Mark Earley, and Chris Brubeck, among others, at the concert.

Brubeck, who led the Dave Brubeck Quintet, is probably best known for the hit "Take Five." Other notable songs include "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "The Duke."

In addition to being a revolutionary jazz musician, Brubeck defied segregation.

"He challenged racial barriers by hiring the African-American bassist Eugene Wright as part of his quartet in 1958 and proceeding to tour the South, a region of the country that did not welcome mixed-race bands," writes Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune. "Brubeck and his wife, Iola, in the 1960s created 'The Real Ambassadors,' a musical that addressed racism head-on and featured Louis Armstrong at a time when the trumpeter was wrongly considered out-of-step with the civil rights era."

The community weighs in

Yesterday, "Dave Brubeck" was a trending topic on Twitter. Many took to the musician's Facebook page to express their sadness over Brubeck's passing as well.

Patch readers also commented on the loss of one of the more famous members of the community:

  • "A tremendous loss for the music community and for our local community. Truly an icon. My prayers are with the Brubeck family." —WiltonMommy
  • "Oh no! Such a loss not only for our community but for music lovers worldwide. I saw Dave and his group perform some years ago at Carnegie Hall, and even in his 80s, he still "had juice." My sympathy goes out to the Brubeck family." —Lorna
  • "There needs to be a special memorial celebration in Wilton and we all should wear something with a music theme to honor Dave. A huge loss, God bless the Brubeck family at this time of grieving." —Anthony Bennie
  • "The town needs to formally acknowledge the passing of not only a music legend, but the patriarch of a family that has given so much to this community. We owe them, and I'm very sorry for their loss." —Sue Donem
  • "The music world has lost a legend. R.I.P. Dave!
On a personal note: A few years ago while sitting waiting to have some blood tests done at Norwalk Medical Center, Brubeck entered and like everyone picked a number to wait his turn. Recognizing him, I said: "You shouldn't have to take any number but five!" which brought a smile to his face. A true gentleman." —Joe Buhler

This animal might look like a harmless, big-eyed baby ewok, but the slow loris is one of the onlyRead More poisonous mammals in the world. Its subtle nature makes it popular in the illegal pet trade, but unknowing humans should stay clear of its toxin, which is released from the sides of its elbows. When threatened, the loris takes the toxin into its mouth and mixes it with saliva. The animal will also lick its hair to deter predators from attack. The toxin can cause death by anaphylactic shock.

Bill I have some possible good news for you. After reading this, I stopped by the Village Market onRead More my way home from a slow, rainy day in the Center in hopes of picking up some kumquats for Filbert. They are out. So it sounds like some of our fellow Wiltonians are laying kumquats around town. I just hope the rain has not scared Filbert. Best to you and your family. I shall pray for you in Church this weekend.

You miss the DAZE of George W?, failing banks, auto industry going under, record high homeRead More forclosures and unemployment, etc etc. Obama is getting it right! BOSTON (Reuters) - The average 401(k) retirement balance for U.S. workers hit a record high of $80,900 in the first quarter, a growth spurt of 75 percent since the stock market's nadir in March 2009, Fidelity Investments said on Thursday based on a survey of its accounts. Most of the recovery is linked to a stock market rally that has lifted the broad S&P 500 Index 145 percent since the close of trading on March 9, 2009. The 401(k) recovery looks even better for workers 55 and older, according to Boston-based Fidelity, the largest U.S. administrator of 401(k) retirement plans. Those pre-retirement workers have seen their average balance nearly double to $255,000 since the first quarter of 2009 when the average balance was $130,700. The analysis covers people who have been with their current employer 10 or more years, Fidelity said.

Israel knows who their enemy is and are not afraid to call them out. After 4 Americans were killedRead More by terrorists in Benghazi, when violence in the Middle East was raging, President Obama in partnership with Hillary Clinton spent $70,000 in taxpayer money on a commercial that aired on Pakistani television apologizing for the "video." PR - It appears that the writer of this item is none other than McMurphy who has been polluting theRead More Patch since the new format arose (just click on the writer's name and you will be taken to McMurphy's profile page). This person is also Randall McMurphy and all the old names including AZ. From all indications, he/she is also DB Cooper so this person is posting on this Board and then commenting on his/her own posts. As someone pointed out a couple of weeks ago, trying to trick other readers is a violation of the Patch's rules, and yet it continues.
