Black & White and Read All Over Art Exhibition at Wilton Library

Whether left, justified or just right of center, Wilton Library has the right type for everyone with the “Black & White and Read All Over” art exhibition, presented by the Women’s Caucus for Art, opening Friday, Nov. 4, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.  The opening reception is free and the public is invited.  The exhibit features works that combine words, text and images. According to the organizers, “Ever since Magritte famously wrote “Ceci n’est pas une pipe,” on his painting of a pipe, pop and conceptual artists have continued this theme of pairing words and images in an effort to make more forceful statements with their art. Language can be used to transform art from the merely aesthetic into the creative and political, in much the same way as poetry or political speech can do the same.”  Twenty-one artists will showcase more than forty of their works.  The exhibit runs through Tuesday, November 29.

The exhibiting artists are Lynne Arovas (Greenwich), G. R. Boggs (Brookfield), Anne Brecher-Bogart (Danbury),  Julia Coash (New Haven), Anne Doris-Eisner (Bethany),  Debbie Gilbert (Stratford),  Elizabeth Helling (Bridgeport),  Jane Lubin (Westport),  Pat Martin (Bethany), Toby Michaels (Westport), Carla Payson (Branford), Sheila Pite (Orange), Pnina Greenwald Ramot (Fairfield), Tina Rohrer (Pound Ridge, NY), Gay Schempp (Winsted), Phyllis Sinrich (Stamford), Victoria Sivigny (Meriden), Terry Spring (New Canaan), Shaw Stuart (Cos Cob),  Jean Swanson (Bethany), and Karen Vogel (Darien).

The Women’s Caucus for Art-Connecticut is a non-profit organization with over 100 members.  It was started in 1990 as a chapter of the National Women’s Caucus for Art originally organized in 1972 during the women’s movement and feminist art.  The goals of the WCA-CT is to continually foster opportunities for women in the arts to produce, exhibit, document works, help communities showcase women’s art and exchange ideas and information.
