Hot & Cool: The Harvie S and James Weidman Duo at the Brubeck Room

will be starting the year off in style with a Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room concert featuring the Harvie S and James Weidman Duo on Sunday, January 8, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The pair has been performing together to adoring audiences all over the U.S.  Harvie S, an award-winning composer, arranger, bassist, educator and producer, has graced the Brubeck Room stage in 2009, when he performed with the Virginia Mayhew Quartet. As Jazz Ambassador of the United States, he has toured throughout Europe and Southeast Asia. He has conducted workshops, lecture demonstrations and presentations throughout the world at such esteemed venues as The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall Jazz Education Program, Eastman School of Music, Berklee College of Music, and The Henry Third Street Music Settlement.

Regarding one of his many original compositions, jazzreview.com noted, “Anyone that is familiar with Harvie S can always count on his originals [Take Your Time] being A-1.”

Pianist James Weidman has been a sideman and accompanist over the past 20 years, but has been increasingly recognized as a significant bandleader and composer. Nine of his works appear on his recent CD, Three Worlds.  Donald Elfman writes in All About Jazz: New York, “Three Worlds is the product of a thoughtful musical soul. Pianist James Weidman is well-versed in the traditional and modern jazz vocabulary and has found ways of deftly incorporating what's he's heard into his playing and composing.''

A reception follows the concert where CDs will be available for purchase and signing.  The Hot & Cool concerts are made possible by the William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks extended to Catherine and Ed Romer and Tish and Chris Brubeck.  Suggested donation for the evening is $10 per person.  Advance registration is strongly recommended due to the popularity of the Hot & Cool concert series.  Pre-registrants should arrive by 3:50 to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be seated after this time if space is available. The next Hot & Cool concert features the Tamir Hendelman Trio on Saturday, Jan. 21, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
