Library Gives Art a Whirl

The Wilton Library's ArtWhirl exhibit begins its month-long run.

Friday night's ArtWhirl exhibition opening was a rousing success, with artists, family members, friends and locals there to show support for the featured artists.  Paintings were displayed along the walls of the Wilton Library for patrons to peruse and purchase.

"Several of us were together on the Weston Commission for the Arts," explained Georgetown resident and featured artist Bobbi Eike Mullen. The featured artists are now part of a group of seven who exhibit in Connecticut and surrounding states as far north as Vermont.

"We are all professional, all accomplished," she added.

"The fact that it is part of a library is unusual, but it's great," commented Doug Leigh, another featured artist and a Shelton resident. "All of my work I show locally, but I have sold pieces all over the country."

There are 98 pieces displayed all told, many of which are for sale. A portion of  the proceeds from them will go to benefit the Library.

The talented group brings a variety of artistic representation to the library with mediums ranging from acrylic to oil to watercolor.

"Mostly I love to do people," said artist Wendy DeMaiorebus Pieper.

She began her career as an artist by receiving her Fine Arts degree and then working as a graphic designer.  A Westport resident, she paints with fellow featured artists Andrew Neilly and Paul Heifetz in a weekly sketch group.

They, in turn, invited DeMaiorebus Pieper to join the group and exhibit at the library. Her piece "Tenor's Barn" drew exclamations from young family members who pointed with excitement and shouted that they recognized the barn.

"I grew up next to it," said the artist with a smile.

Paintings will be displayed and for sale until March 1st.  For more information visit www.wiltonlibrary.org.
