Wilton's Tutoring Center Director Says 'Take Advantage of the Summer'

Written by Liz Young

Though some parents may be busy setting up playdates and vacations for their families, the director of the Tutoring Center in Wilton says they should also start preparing for kids to go back to school.

Director Dotty Josh said parents should encourage their kids to keep learning, even with just about a month left in the summer break.

"Take advantage of the summer," Josh said. "(Kids) still have time ... It will definitely help."

She recommends at least an hour per day working on either learning math tables, reading or writing about books the kids have read.

At the Tutoring Center, located at 5 River Rd., Josh said students typically have a variety of needs.

"Right now it's kind of everything, reading, writing and math," Josh said, though she added that typically high schoolers need more help in math and grade schoolers need more tutoring in reading and writing.

She said many parents come in after December, when report cards come back, or March, when Connecticut Academic Performance Tests happen, to get their child started with tutoring, even if they noticed earlier their child was struggling.

"Parents normally don't come when school starts," Josh said.

Josh, though, advised against waiting until the school year starts to get ahead.

"Don't wait until the report card comes out," Josh said. "Start as early as possible."

See the Tutoring Center's website for more information about how to help your kids get ahead.
