Good news for travelers on the southbound Merritt Parkway in Greenwich.

Work is done at the newly-renovated the Greenwich southbound service area which is scheduled to reopen at noon today.

This plaza is the 17th of 23 Connecticut highway service plazas to be completely renovated. The Greenwich northbound plaza opened on Jan. 17. Project Service LLC, which has a 35-year contract with the state to renovate and operate the Service Plazas, started the renovation work in Greenwich on Nov. 26, 2012.

The service plazas are open 24 hours a day, and offer a variety of food options. The Greenwich Southbound plaza includes Subway, Dunkin’ Donuts, an Alltown Convenience Store, and an ExxonMobil gas station.

The Greenwich plaza, as well as all the other service areas has a series of “green” features. The service plaza will qualify to operate to “Silver LEED” standards.  The Greenwich facility will utilize photovoltaic solar panels, which decreases its dependence on traditional power sources.

“We are very excited that both of the plazas on the Merritt in Greenwich are now complete and serving travelers. The plazas in Greenwich, as well as all of our plazas, provide great food choices, clean restrooms, fuel and convenience,” said Paul Landino, President and CEO of Project Service. “More than half of the Service Plazas in the state have been completed renovated, and we look forward to our ongoing renovation effort as we continue to serve those traveling on Connecticut’s highways.

There are six remaining Merritt Parkway service plazas under renovation in Madison, Fairfield and New Canaan are expected to reopen in late 2014 or early 2015.
