Take a (Virtual) Drive Over the New Tappan Zee Bridge

The audience at the Westchester Marriott Monday night got to meet the design-build team and take a closer look at the new Tappan Zee Bridge.

Replacing the current Tappan Zee Bridge, the New NY Bridge will offer not just four lanes of traffic on either direction, but bike and walking lanes over the wide Tappan Zee stretch of the Hudson River.

Dredging for the new bridge is expected to begin this summer. The first span is due to be open by 2016 and plans call for the bridge to be completed by 2018.

“One of the stars," according to Brian Conybeare, a spokesman for the project, will be the so-called “Left Coast Lifter,” the largest floating crane in the world, able to lift the equivalent poundage of 12 Statues of Liberty.

It will float on four barges and sit quite high on the river. It will make its way to the Hudson River through the Panama Canal, across the Gulf of Mexico onward to the north. Just its arrival should be something to behold.
