United Rentals of Stamford Buys National Pump

United Rentals, a national company headquartered at 100 Stamford Place, announced Monday that it will buy National Pump, the second largest specialty pump rental company in North America.

The purchase will cost United Rentals $765 million in cash and $15 million in stock. United Rentals plans to double the size of the pump rental business within five years, in part by expanding the products offered. The company says it expects to make back its total investiment within 18 months.

"With National Pump, United Rentals enters the pump rental segment, one of the largest and highest growth specialty markets," United Rentals said in a Monday news release. "The company has been executing its strategy of expanding its specialty businesses, and this acquisition provides another significant product line with attractive margins and returns.

"In addition, National Pump will offer significant cross-selling opportunities with both United Rentals’ and National Pump’s customer bases."

United Rentals, founded in 1997, describes itself as "the world’s largest equipment rental provider, with an integrated network of 830 rental locations in 49 states and 10 Canadian provinces, and over $7 billion OEC [original equipment cost] of rental fleet including 3,300 classes of equipment."
