"How to Get Published Workshop" to be Held by The Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College

The scheduling of a five-week comprehensive publishing course by The Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College has been announced by David Donnelly, Director of the Center for Continuing Education. The course will be held on Thursdays from February 13 to March 13, 2014, 7 to 9 p.m. 

"Having such experienced literary professionals as Cynthia Manson and Caitlin Alexander teach this course gives writers a rare opportunity to truly understand what it takes to get their books published and how to write an effective query letter," Donnelly said.  

The registration fee for the 10-hour workshop is $300. The enrollment deadline is February 4, 2014. 

The topics to be covered include

  • Defining the role of the literary agent
  • How to find the right agent for your work
  • What happens to your book at the publishing house once it is acquired
  • Which publishing option is best for you
  • How to build an effective book promotion program
  • How to write an attention-grabbing query letter

The course will also cover traditional legacy publishing, small presses, packagers, self-publishing and e-publishing. Students will analyze sample pitch letters and learn how to include an all-important hook statement in preparing a query letter. The instructors will provide students with critical feedback for improvement and impact.

Literary agent Cynthia Manson is an instructor at the Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College, a consultant for Advertising Age and other Crain Communications publications, and an independent literary agent. She was formerly with the Sterling Lord Literary Agency and the publishing firms G.P.Putnam & Sons, Bertelsmann and Scientific American.

The authors Manson represents write novels, nonfiction and poetry. She graduated from Scripps College in Claremont, California with a B.A. in English Literature and Fine Arts.

During eleven years at Random House, former senior editor Caitlin Alexander acquired a background in upmarket commercial fiction, literary fiction, women’s fiction, historical fiction, suspense, mysteries, adventure thrillers, historical romance and narrative nonfiction. She has edited many New York Times bestsellers, and award-winning books.

She freelance edits for independent authors, agents' clients and publishers, and teaches at the Novel Writing Master Class at Mediabistro and in workshops at the Sarah Lawrence Writing Institute.  

Enrollment for this course is limited to maintain a small-group workshop environment. Early registration is recommended to insure participation. 

The course will be held at the SLC Center for Continuing Education located at 45 Wrexham Road, Bronxville, NY.
