Chinese Mitten Crab Found in Greenwich

Invasive crustacean could cause riverbank erosion and damage fishing gear and compete with local marine life for food.

An invasive crab, native to China, which can cause riverbank damage, and compete with local marine life, has been found in the Mianus Pond fishway on the Mianus River.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and Connecticut Sea Grant confirmed that a juvenile Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) has been found in Connecticut, according to an announcement released Friday.

Here is the announcement:

"In late June, the crab was collected from the Mianus Pond fishway on the Mianus River by Joe Cassone, conservation assistant for the Greenwich Conservation Commission. The crab was first delivered to DEEP’s Marine Headquarters in Old Lyme, and following examination by DEEP and CT Sea Grant biologists, sent to the Marine Invasion Research Lab of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center for a confirmation of the initial identification.

“This discovery is of some concern,” said DEEP Deputy Commissioner Susan Frechette. “In high densities, these crabs can damage fishing gear, clog pumps and intake pipes, cause riverbank erosion through their burrowing activities and outcompete native species for food and habitat. However, these crabs are relatively new to the Atlantic coast, and at this time it is unclear as to what their effects will actually be.”

"The Chinese mitten crab is native to eastern Asia, but has spread to both Europe and North America. In Europe, it was first found in Germany in the early 1900’s and has since expanded its distribution throughout a number of waterways in northern and central Europe, most recently becoming established in the Thames River (England). Chinese mitten crabs were first found in North America on the U.S. Pacific coast in 1992 and now have a well established population throughout the San Francisco Bay estuary system, including the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers and a number of smaller rivers flowing into the bay. First found along the Atlantic coast in 2005, a number of individuals have been found in Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, several New Jersey estuaries and the Hudson River. The two most likely means of introduction appear to be transport of larvae and small crabs in ship ballast water and deliberate release to establish a fishery or local food resource (in its native range, this crab is considered a delicacy). Under the Federal Lacey Act, importation and interstate transport of this animal is prohibited.

"Unlike other crabs found in North America, these crabs spend much of their life in fresh water. Chinese mitten crabs are catadromous; sub-adults live in freshwater for 1-4 years and then migrate to estuarine/marine waters (typically in late summer or the fall), where they reach maturity and spawn. Each female can produce 100,000 to 1,000,000 eggs, which are carried until they hatch in late winter. The larvae remain in the water column for 1-2 months before settling and developing into juvenile crabs. In late spring/early summer the juveniles begin moving upstream into brackish and then fresh water. These crabs cannot swim, but are adept at walking, and on land they can walk around obstacles.

“It’s important that people keep an eye out for these crabs and report them,” says Nancy Balcom, Associate Director of Connecticut Sea Grant at the University of Connecticut. “Early detection of new species in our marine or fresh waters can help lead to more options for control and spread prevention. In 2010, there was a reported sighting of a crab in a pond near the Mill River in Fairfield that may have been a mitten crab. Unfortunately, we were unable to catch that crab to confirm its identification.”

"Chinese mitten crabs claws are of equal size; all but the very smallest (less than 1 inch shell width) appear to have dark fuzzy growth on the claws with whitish tips (hence the name “mitten crab”). The smooth shell or carapace is brownish to greenish, up to approximately four inches across, with four spines on each side and a notch between the eyes. Total crab size, including legs, can be up to 12 inches.

"Individuals finding a crab that they suspect to be a Chinese mitten crab should keep the crab on ice or freeze it (please do not release the crab), note the exact location it was found, and contact DEEP Marine Fisheries (860-434-6043), DEEP Inland Fisheries (860-424-3474) or CT Sea Grant (Nancy Balcom, 860-407-9107).

"Any crab found in fresh water should be investigated, as there are no freshwater crabs in New England."

Adult Chinese mitten crabs have several distinctive characteristics that aid in identification:

  • Claws are of equal size.
  • “Furry” claws with whitish tips.
  • Brown to green carapace, four spines (the fourth can be small) on each side.
  • Notch between the eyes.
  • Only crab that would be found in freshwater in the Northeast.

The concluding paragraph from the item above: "Hopefully her 30-day experience will remove herRead More fear of firearms and help her recognize that the vast majority of American firearms owners have taken to their responsibility with the necessary seriousness and gravity required. Maybe she’ll also learn that no matter how many laws you pass, you can’t regulate irresponsibility out of existence. Grown-ups still have to be grown-ups. Maybe she will also learn how the Bill of Rights is supposed to work, and how one amendment strengthens another. At a minimum, people like Heidi Yewman should be passingly familiar with the Constitutional rights they’re agitating to take away from their fellow citizens."

never forget Newtown...!! (RNS) Each Father’s Day, Neil Heslin and his son, Jesse Lewis, usedRead More to go to a car show. But that tradition died when 6-year-old Jesse was shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. This Father’s Day, Heslin, who has been active with other Sandy Hook parents in pushing for gun control legislation, is giving his support to the No Father’s Day campaign. Speaking at a media teleconference to launch the campaign, Heslin said, “Jesse was my only child, my only immediate family. I don’t have a father to share Father’s Day with.” Initiated by PICO National Network’s Lifelines to Healing Campaign, the campaign asks participants to send e-cards to Congress, urging passage of legislation to create universal background checks and end gun trafficking.

Exploiting dead children for your political points is disgusting and vile. Given the poster thereRead More can be no surprise about such.

From linked article_______ "The victims “have a financial uncertainty, they need theRead More money,” Feinberg said. “You have to say, ‘Here’s the money, here’s what we’re doing with it.’” Some Newtown families say that didn't happen in their town. Lafferty-Hassinger posted to Facebook her frustration about the United Way requiring "proof of hardship" to determine how to distribute funds: "We shouldn't have to fight for what is rightfully ours, but we won't be taken advantage of in our darkest hour," she wrote. "We've all been walking a fine line between not wanting to profit from the death of our loved ones and not wanting someone else to profit from our source of grief. We went down when we were kicked, but we are Sandy Hook. It's time to stand back up."___________ I reckon my questions are thusly: What financial uncertainty is there in the death of a child, AND since when did money that is donated privately become something that is 'rightfully' belonging to someone else due to a tragedy that is not a natural event like a tornado or hurricane?

Where is the concern for the character development of our kids? Where is the concern for theRead More physical health of our kids? What long term health effects will these 'pills' have on the young - still forming bodies? Will taking these drugs have any long term side effects that can make life miser able in the future? If a 16 year old girl is being bullied into sex, is that an excuse for providing this contraceptive? Can she get on the pill ...the one that is taken profilactically - without an Rx? I think not...why the difference? Having condoms in a bowl like candy in the high school nurses office is a major contradiction to the teachings in many a home...and now this...how sad. Childhood gets shorter and shorter....

Reality is minors have sex. As for character development, I would rather my 16 year old daughterRead More continue her development without an unintended pregnancy. If your child child is being bullied into sex, having sex regularly and not talking to their parents, or having to get condoms from the school nurses office as if they were like candy....you as parents have missed the boat and the the ship of parental guidance has set sail long ago.
