Greenleaf Organic Bakery and Cafe Makes the Farmers' Market Rounds

By Liz Young

The Greenleaf Organic Bakery and Cafe, located at 126 Old Ridgefield Rd., may have only opened last July, but it's already making itself known from Danbury to Southbury to Westport.

The bakery has been at the Wilton Farmers' Market almost every week this summer, its first summer attending the market.

Maris Brauner, a 22-year-old employee of the bakery, said Greenleaf's presence at the market has been a success.

"They've been really good, they're good for exposure," Brauner said. "It's a really good way to get our name out there."

She said Greenleaf sets up a tent at a farmers' market nearly every day of the week – Newtown on Tuesdays, Westport some Thursdays, Southbury on most Thursdays, Danbury on Fridays and the SoNo Marketplace Fridays through Sundays. The biggest benefit to doing so is fostering community, Brauner said.

"It's getting our face out there," Brauner said. "It shows that we're involved."

Greenleaf offers a variety of its good at the markets, including tarts, croissants, muffins, bundt cakes, salads and sandwiches. Many of the greens the bakery and cafe uses come from Ambler Farms, the local farm that also sets up a tent at the Wilton Farmers' Market weekly.

The most popular selection is the fallen chocolate soufflé, Brauner said. Other than that, she said it depends on the day.

"The croissants are pretty big though," Brauner said.

The Wilton Farmers' Market is held every Wednesday from 12:30 to 5 p.m., June 5 through Sept. 25, at the Wilton Historical Society, located at 224 Danbury Rd.
