The exhibition highlights artists who work in more than one medium, work with more than one material or more than one technique. It features sculptures, paintings, objects and wall works by 25 international artists.

Painters paint, sculptors sculpt. Textile and mixed media artists are less restricted by material or technique. They may weave and plait and knit and crochet and stitch and felt as well as carve, construct, draw, dye and paint. The artists in Of Two Minds: Artists Who Do More Than One of a Kind show this remarkable range, working in different mediums, mastering different techniques and materials and creating complementary or contrasting works along the way. Each artist has provided two contrasting works — some have provided us more. Marian Bijlenga, of the Netherlands, has sent a stitched work of horsehair, one of fish scales, a wall assemblage of glass “doodles” resulting from her glass experiments and two glass sculptures. Stephanie Jacques of Belgium will exhibit clay-coated and textile-edged woven baskets, with wood-worked bases, along with a stitched photographic print. Hideho Tanaka of Japan combines a large patched linen weaving with sculptures of torched paper and steel and Lawrence LaBianca of California exhibits interactive works that combine glassblowing, prints, wood and metal work.

For 26 years, browngrotta arts has promoted international contemporary art textiles, mixed media and dimensional art. For more information: Contact Tom Grotta: 203.834.0623 or art@browngrotta.com.
