Piano Recital - Charles Ives's Concord Sonata

Local pianist and composer Brendan Fox will give a short introductory lecture and then perform Charles Ives's Concord Sonata, an epic masterwork of American piano music. Charles Ives was a native of Danbury, Connecticut, and wrote this piece almost one hundred years ago. With that in mind, his bold, imaginative vision is even more extraordinary. In four movements he paints musical portraits of four figures of the Transcendentalist era: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott, and Henry David Thoreau. The music ranges from mind-bending dissonance to sweeping Romantic gestures, evocations of church hymns and patriotic tunes, and delicate faraway sounds.

This is a special recital, as Brendan is one of the youngest pianists to ever tackle this formidable piece, and this first public performance is the culmination of over four years of study and obsession.
