The Making of a Champion: Pinnochio's Pulled Pork Pizza

Until 11 p.m Tuesday night, residents had a rare chance to stick their teeth into the award-winning pizza being made in the video above at Pinnochio Pizza on Center Street in Wilton.

Master pizzaiolo Bruno DiPablo created this pulled pork pizza with his son and it won first place at a BBQ competition in Greenwich two years ago and features succulent combination of smoked pork, mozzarella cheese, red onion, bacon and barbecue sauce.

What's even better is that 100 percent of Pinocchio Pizza's Tuesday sales were being donated to the American Cancer Society. DiPablo's inspiration for the fundraising event is close to his heart.

"My mom is a cancer survivor," he told Patch. "No matter who or what you do, everyone is impacted by cancer in one way or another and I wanted to try to lead the way and inspire others to donate."

DiPablo said that now is a critical time for charities such as the American Cancer Society because the sluggish economy has reduced the amount of Americans' dispensable income.

"When purse strings are tight, charities are affected the most," DiPablo said. "Whether your dispensable income is 25 cents for Bazooka gum or $100,000 for a fancy car, it's the charities that suffer."

Pinnochio Pizza's charitable contributions go beyond Tuesday's event. The employees feed 250 homeless people per month at the Open Door Shelter in Norwalk.

"The work we do there has never been publicized because I'm not looking to be in the limelight," DiPablo said. "But this time I said, 'Enough is enough. We need all the help we can get.'"
