Open House in Wilton Caters to Last Minute Christmas Shoppers

The longest running gift shop in Wilton, "Open House" offers retail therapy to customers the day before Christmas and year round.

With less than a full shopping day left until Christmas, Open House Gift Shop in Wilton was a hive of activity Monday afternoon.

The staff, both welcoming and efficient, made suggestions and answered questions in a manner that suggests they're accustom to customers' last minute shopping routine.

"The kids home from college will come in the day before Christmas. And a lot of men. We cater to last minute shoppers," said Leslie Hueg, one of three owners of the store.

Indeed Open House's broad selection puts shoppers at ease immediately. There really is something for everyone. Whether from the "man cave" with suitably masculine gift ideas, the baby gift section, the display island of Vera Bradley quilted bags and accessories, or the myriad kitchen and entertaining gifts, stressed shoppers exhaled deep sighs of relief.

"We have Christmas crackers, paper goods, Christmas candles, Stonewall Kitchen items, ornaments and candy. And we have gifts starting at $5.00," said Nancy Toothaker, one of the three owners of Open house.

Toothaker, who has worked at Open House for twelve years said the store doubled in size a few years ago when it took over space from an adjacent store.

Hueg said that Open House, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, employs two or three Wilton High School students each year and invites them back during college breaks.

"It's like retail therapy working here," said Hueg. "We're like a family and people return year after year. Customers even come back to visit after they move away."

Open House will be open on Dec. 24 from 9:30a.m. until 3:00p.m. for last minute shoppers.
