Fifth Grade Football Playoffs: New Canaan Black 14 - Wilton White 6

Wilton White suffers its first defeat of the season, falling to New Canaan Black in the FCFL semifinals

Bringing to an end a terrific season in which the Wilton White fifth grade football team won eight straight contests, the team fell 14-6 to New Canaan Black in the semifinals of the Fairfield County Football league on Saturday night at Fujitani Field.

Wilton’s effort seemed doomed from the start when on the first play from scrimmage a halfback option pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by New Canaan.  With the two point conversion the Warriors were down on the scoreboard 8-0, but psychologically as well.

Wilton’s second possession of the evening began at the New Canaan 45 after Austin Cameron tackled the Rams ball carrier for a six yard loss on third and five, forcing a punt.  Blake Pagano-Walley, Trevor Martines and Sean Sullivan ran the ball between the tackles at the tough New Canaan defense gaining a total of six yards.  On fourth and four at the 39, quarterback Everett Andersen faked a pitch and bootlegged right seven yards for a first down.  Later in the drive on fourth and eight at the 21, Andersen found Jimmy McKiernan up the seam for a thirteen yard pass play to keep the drive alive.  Eventually Sean Sullivan swept right for a touchdown and while the point after was no good, the Warriors were back in the game.

On the ensuing possession, New Canaan executed a near flawless twelve play drive to score their second touchdown.  The point after hit the cross bar leaving the score at 14-6.

In the second half Wilton’s defense bent but did not break, twice stopping New Canaan inside the Warrior 20.  However, Wilton could never get its running game going so a second half stalemate left New Canaan the victor.
