Fifth Grade Football: Wilton White 20 - New Canaan Red 7

Wilton White runs its record to 5-0, convincingly defeating a previously unbeaten team for the second straight week

For the second consecutive week, Wilton 5 White took on an undefeated New Canaan football team and came away with a dominant victory, this time 20-7 in a game not nearly as close as the score might suggest.

After trading possessions at the beginning of the game, the Warriors began what has become this team’s trademark, an impressive 14 play ball control drive.  Running behind the offensive line of Austin Cameron, Chip Hulse, Conner Healey, Charlie Hastings, Jack Tinnen, Brian Cipri, Matt Gulbin and Aidan Shannon, running backs Blake Pagano-Walley, Sean Sullivan and Trevor Martines took turns slamming the ball directly at the New Canaan defense, twice converting on fourth down.  Forced to key on Wilton’s running backs, New Canaan was fooled as quarterback Everett Andersen faked a pitch and beat three defenders on a bootleg to the corner of the end zone for a 10 yard touchdown to put the Warriors up 6-0.

New Canaan attempted to take to the air on their next possession, but fierce pressure from Ryan Witty, Ryan Johnson, Conner Healey, Michael Coffey and Aidan Jasinski, a sack for an 11 yard loss by Jimmy McKiernan and an incomplete pass forced by Matt Gulbin’s hit on the quarterback thwarted their effort.

The Warriors started the second half with the ball and rolled 70 yards on eight running plays, highlighted by Martines’ 16 yard scamper, two nine yard runs by Sullivan and Martines’s five yard blast for a touchdown.

Trailing 12-0, New Canaan needed to move the ball, but the Warrior defense, including Austin Cameron, Jack Tinnen, Michael Coffey, Quinn Wiseman, Davis Cote and Josh White, was unyielding.  On consecutive plays, Matt Gulbin tackled the opposing quarterback for a 4 yard loss, New Canaan covered their own fumble, and a host of Warrior tacklers swarmed the ball carrier for a 10 yard loss, forcing a punt that resulted in great field position for Wilton.

On the next series Martines took over for Wilton, running for 28 of the 40 yards on the drive, including the touchdown on an 8 yard run over and through would-be tacklers.  He also ran 5 yards for the two point conversion giving Wilton an insurmountable 20-0 lead late in the third quarter.

A stunned New Canaan squad failed to move the ball as the fourth quarter unfolded when Chip Hulse recovered a fumble forced by the Warrior defense.

Showing the team’s depth, Brendan Sullivan and Conner Healey took over in the backfield with Michael Coffey at quarterback for the remainder of the game.

New Canaan finally found the end zone on the last play of the game, and when they tacked on the conversion the final score, which didn’t really reflect Wilton’s dominance, was 20-7.

With a 5-0 record, Wilton White is in sole possession of first place in the league.
