Fifth Grade Football: Wilton White 20 - New Canaan White 0

With a 20-0 victory over New Canaan White, Wilton White completed a perfect 7-0 regular season, outscoring its opponents 138-22.

The Wilton White fifth grade football team closed out a perfect 7-0 regular season with a convincing 20-0 drubbing of a New Canaan White team that had lost just once previously this season.

New Canaan gained 18 yards on their first play from scrimmage, but Wilton’s defense took over from there surrendering just two more first downs the entire game.  Michael Coffey and Austin Cameron both made tackles for big losses, forcing the first of six punts on the day.

The Warriors took some time to get their offense on track but on their second possession began to move the ball on the ground, with Blake Pagano-Walley and Sean Sullivan grinding out yards.  On third and long from the New Canaan 45, Everett Andersen took a bootleg left, juked a defender and sprinted to the 31.  A personal foul penalty took the Warriors to the 14 where Sean Sullivan broke off tackle, bounced to the outside and dove across the goal line with a New Canaan defender clinging to his legs.  The point after was no good.

A shell-shocked New Canaan was swarmed under on their next possession as Sullivan, Cameron, Coffey, Trevor Martines and Matt Gulbin combined to drive their opponents back.

Starting with great field position at the New Canaan 38, the Warriors immediately took to the air, as Andersen threw downfield to Jimmy McKiernan who made an acrobatic catch for a 24 yard gain.  Martines and Pagano-Walley ran the ball to within inches of the goal line where Sullivan punched it in.  Andersen kicked the point after, worth two points in fifth grade, to extend the Warrior lead to 14-0 at halftime.

The Warriors wasted no time in the second half, moving the ball to the 45 where Pagano-Walley motored through a huge hole opened by Brian Cipri and Brendan Sullivan and then broke tackles all the way to the end zone to make the score 20-0.

Wilton’s ground game controlled the clock and the game the rest of the way.  Quinn Wiseman, Brendan Sullivan, Conner Healey and Ashton Argento pounded the ball at the weary New Canaan defense.  On the rare occasion when New Canaan had the ball, McKiernan, Coffey, Gulbin, Martines and Sean Sullivan, who came up from his safety position to make several tackles in the backfield, made gaining yardage close to impossible.

As the only undefeated team during the regular season, Wilton White will be the top seed with home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
