Sixth Grade Football Playoffs: Wilton Blue 28 - Darien Blue 13

Wilton Blue's unstoppable running attack paves the way to a playoff victory over Darien

The Wilton Blue sixth grade football team defeated a tough Darien Blue squad 28-13 in the wind and rain at Fujitani Field on Sunday to advance to the AFC division final next weekend versus Ridgefield Black on Wilton’s home turf.

The Warriors set the tone from the outset as the offensive line of Jack DiRocco, Erik Lebek, Dominick Polito, Jack Lenz, Sean Purdy, Jack Savarese and Noah Levy took control from the first play.  Coach Hyzy’s confidence in his big men caused him to eschew the punt on fourth and one on the Warrior 39.  He was well rewarded as Austin Andersen burst up the middle for a nine yard gain.  Two plays later Andersen burst for 18, dragging would-be Darien tacklers along for the ride.  After Kyle Hyzy ran to the 15, Matthew McVey perfectly followed his blockers for a 15 yard touchdown run.  DiRocco kicked the point after to put the Warriors ahead for good 7-0.

On the ensuing possession, Darien had some success moving the ball, but a sack by Nish Wangneo and tackles for loss by Levy and Savarese forced a turnover on downs at the Wilton 48.

On the second play of the next series, Andersen took a handoff from Ryan Healey and blew through a massive hole created by Lebek, Levy and DiRocco for a 51 yard scoring run.  DiRocco’s kick made it 14-0 Warriors.

After Darien was stopped on downs at their own 36, Wilton quickly made them pay.  Runs by Healey and Andersen moved the ball to the 25 where Hyzy broke off a scoring run to make it 21-0 late in the second quarter.

Despite a sack by Steven Tuin and a tackle for loss by Savarese, Darien moved deep into Wilton territory, but time expired leaving the score 21-0 at the half.

Darien did not go quietly, opening the second half with an impressive, 16 play, 70 yard drive for a score to close the gap to 21-7.

While showing some life on offense, Darien had little success on defense.  McVey and Andersen pounded the ball at the defense and then Hyzy broke free for a 49 yard touchdown run to make the score 28-7 in favor of the Warriors.

Darien added a late score to make the game look respectable, 28-13.

The Warriors will take on Ridgefield Black next weekend at Fujitani Field in the AFC division final for the right to play for the FCFL championship the following weekend.
