Sixth Grade Football: Wilton Blue 12 - Ridgefield Black 6

Hard hitting Warriors pound the Ridgefield Tigers on their home turf.

Despite being outweighed by undefeated Ridgefield’s massive offensive and defensive lines, and overcoming adversity, sixth grade Wilton Blue went up to Ridgefield’s Tiger Hollow on Sunday and came away with an old-fashioned 12-6 victory, using smashmouth offense and ferocious defense to subdue the Tigers.

The Tigers learned on their first play from scrimmage that the Warriors had come to play, as Austin Andersen and Dominick Polito lit up the ball carrier.  A muffed snap and gang tackle for loss forced the Tigers to punt from their own 22.

After moving into Tiger territory, Warrior quarterback Ryan Healy powered his way to the Ridgefield 30 where an illegal helmet-to-helmet tackle tacked on 15 penalty yards, but more seriously knocked Healy out of the game for the duration.  Without their starting quarterback, the Warrior drive began to stall, but on fourth and eleven, the offensive line of Jack DiRocco, Erik Lebek, Polito, Jack Lenz, Sean Purdy, Jack Savarese and Noah Levi provided great blocks for Kyle Hyzy who converted the first down to the Tiger two.  Two plays later Hyzy punched in from the one foot line to put the Warriors up 6-0.  The point after was no good.

Noah Levi and the defensive line including Ryan Kauffman and Nishant Wangneo took over on the next series.  Levi made a great tackle for loss on fourth and five giving the ball back to the offense on the Warrior 37.  Hyzy wasted no time on the ensuing possession, when following blocks by Andersen and Kauffman, he squirted through a hole, bounced back across the field and streaked 63 yards to make it 12-0.  Again the point after kick was missed.

The rest of the game was mostly a seesaw battle in the middle of the field.  Ridgefield earned just three first downs on the day, but broke one long running play for a score to make the game seem closer than it was.  Jimmy O’Brien, Jack DiRocco, Jack Savarese, Noah Levi, Austin Andersen, Stephen Tuin and Dominick Polito all had highlight reel type tackles on defense during the game.

On offense, Hyzy, Andersen, O’Brien, Nico Kouvaris and Cooper Heinemann all pitched in admirably at quarterback in place of the injured Healy.

Wilton is now 2-0 on the season and will host Darien Blue next Sunday at Wilton’s Fujitani Field.
