Sixth Grade Football: Wilton Blue 21 - Darien White 6

Wilton 6 Blue dominates on opening day of football season

The Wilton 6 Blue football team raced out to a 21-0 halftime lead and then coasted to a 21-6 victory over Darien White in the opening game of the FCFL season at Fujitani Field on Sunday.

Wilton set the tone for the game on Darien’s third play from scrimmage when middle linebacker Austin Andersen’s hit on the Darien ball carrier resulted in a fumble recovered by Jack Savarese.

Wasting no time, the Warrior offense struck quickly as Kyle Hyzy burst through a hole opened by the offensive line of Erik Lebek, Sean Purdy, Jack Savarese, Jack Lenz, Noah Levi, Dominick Polito and Jack DiRocco, then bounced to the outside and streaked 38 yards to the Darien 10.  Consecutive runs by Matthew McVey and Ryan Healey set up Healey’s sneak for the game’s first score.  Jack DiRocco added the extra point to make it 7-0.

On Darien’s next possession, Cooper Heinemann’s sack forced Darien to punt setting up another scoring drive.  Rookie running backs Jake and Ryan Kauffman each had impressive runs, but it was Hyzy scoring on a 13 yard run on third and long to put the Warriors up 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.

On the ensuing possession, pressure from the Warrior defense, which was dominant all day, caused a Darien fumble, which was recovered by Noah Levi.  Wilton gave the ball back on downs, but Hyzy picked off an errant Darien pass and then later scored again on a 30 yard run with four seconds left in the half.  Jack DiRocco’s kick was good running the score to 21-0 at halftime.

The second half was all about the Warrior defense.  Even with several players out of position and gaining experience in new spots, the Warriors continued to pound the Darien ball carriers and harass the quarterback.  Dominick Polito and Jack Savarese were everywhere, recording several sacks and tackles for loss, and Polito forced yet another fumble when he blew past a Darien lineman forcing the quarterback into a bad pitch.  Jack DiRocco and Erik Lebek also made great defensive plays in the second half.
