Sixth Grade Football: Wilton Blue 22 - Westport South 0

Wilton Blue dominates again while moving to 4-0 on the season

Kyle Hyzy ran for touchdowns of 71, 41 and 71 yards, and the defense was unyielding, as the sixth grade Wilton Blue football team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 22-0 pounding of Westport South Sunday in Westport.

Despite being outweighed by about 20 pounds at every offensive and defensive line position, the Warriors put on a blocking and tackling clinic.  The defensive line of Jimmy O’Brien, Jack Savarese, Max Downing, Dominick Polito, Steven Tuin and Cooper Heinemann was tough all day but set the tone for the contest when they forced a fumble, recovered by Tuin, on the game’s first play.

Wilton did not convert that early opportunity, but on the first play of their second offensive series, the offensive line of Erik Lebek, O’Brien, Savarese, Jack Lenz, Noah Levi, Polito and Heinemann opened a hole on the right side, allowing Kyle Hyzy to follow lead blocks by Ryan Healey and Matthew McVey for a 71 yard streak to the end zone.  Jack DiRocco converted the kick to make it 7-0.

While Westport made some progress on the ground, particularly straight up the middle, when they took to the air Wilton was up to the challenge.  With Matthew Kurtz, Noah Levi and Steven Tuin applying strong pressure on the quarterback, linebackers Jake Kauffman, Hyzy and DiRocco, and the secondary of Erik Lebek and Healey denied the pass.

Shortly before halftime Hyzy ran for a 41 yard score.  DiRocco again made the kick and it was 14-0 at the half.

On the second play of the second half Hyzy again ran for 71 yards, a carbon copy of the first touchdown.  This time Jack DiRocco kicked the extra point against a live rush, worth two points and a 22-0 lead, which essentially sealed the game for the Warriors.

While the game was no longer in doubt, there were more heroics to come, notably Niko Kouvaris’s scrambling throw to Savarese for a first down and Erik Lebek’s nifty interception of a Westport pass deep in Warrior territory.  Running backs Ryan and Jake Kauffman moved the ball in the second half, allowing the Warriors to eat up the clock.
