Sixth Grade Football: Wilton Blue 27 - New Canaan Black 6

Wilton Blue demolishes arch-rival New Canaan Black to complete the regular season 6-1.

After a disappointing loss last week, the Wilton Blue sixth grade football team rebounded with by far their best performance of the season, crushing previously unbeaten New Canaan Black 27-6 to complete the regular season with a league-leading 6-1 record.

The offensive line of Dominick Polito, Noah Levi, Jack Savarese, Jack Lenz, Sean Purdy, Erik Lebek and Jack DiRocco established control of the line of scrimmage from the outset, creating running room for Kyle Hyzy and Austin Andersen as the Warriors embarked on a thirteen play drive culminating in Andersen’s two yard touchdown dive.  DiRocco made the point after to put Wilton up 7-0 early in the second quarter.

Steven Tuin and Savarese, who wreaked havoc on the line all day, made nice tackles to thwart New Canaan, forcing a punt.  The Warriors controlled the ball for the next nine plays, but turned the ball over on downs at the New Canaan 14.  Jimmy O’Brien’s sack of the quarterback shortly before halftime sent a fired up Wilton team to the locker room at halftime with a 7-0 lead.

The running back duo of Hyzy and Andersen continued to make things difficult for New Canaan immediately after halftime, leading the Warrior attack all the way to the New Canaan 15.  On fourth and eight, Hyzy’s halfback pass was hauled in at the 1 by Erik Lebek, leading to Andersen’s second touchdown run of the day and a 13-0 lead.  Wilton’s impressive drive took 7:43 off the clock.

Savarese and Noah Levi made nice tackles on the next possession and on fourth and three at the 48, the defensive line of Cooper Heinemann, Lenz, Polito, O’Brien and Purdy stuffed the New Canaan runner giving Wilton the ball.

Two plays later, Hyzy broke free for a 47 yard touchdown run and an insurmountable 20-0 lead.

New Canaan struck back when their quarterback scrambled away from huge defensive pressure for a 54 yard touchdown run.  The Warriors stopped the two point conversion and the score was 20-6.

Wilton’s final possession was much like their others.  Hyzy ran for 15, Matthew McVey for 3, Andersen for 14 and 7 and then Hyzy for 37 all the way to the 3.  Jake Kauffman punched it in for the touchdown and DiRocco added the point after to make the score 27-6.

New Canaan’s last gasp was ended when Andersen picked off a pass by the New Canaan quarterback.
