Wilton District 10s Cruise Past Darien American

Warriors earn number 2 seed in Pool B; Advance to the double elimination round.

The Wilton 10s District baseball team celebrated Independence Day by completing pool play with a 9-1 defeat of Darien American on Saturday in Stamford.

With the exception of one four walk inning that resulted in the lone Darien run, Wilton's pitchers kept the Darien hitters completely in check, surrendering just one hit in the contest.

The Darien run came in the bottom of the second, putting the Warriors behind 1-0.  But the deficit would not last long.

A lead off walk by Ryan van Heyst and singles by Sam Strazza and Everett Andersen set the stage for Kevin Hyzy, whose two RBI single put the Warriors ahead for good.  Ryan Sorbo and Eli Ackerman then scored on wild pitches to give Wilton some breathing room.

Darien never really threatened the rest of the way, but their pitchers held Wilton in check until the top of the sixth.  Craig Hyzy led off with a base hit sparking a five run, seven hit uprising.  Van Heyst and Anthony Passaniti singled in front of Andersen whose triple drove in two.  Sorbo then hit a blast off the top of the fence for a double.  Kevin Hyzy and Brian Cipri rounded out the hit parade.

Wilton's first three pitchers Andersen, Passaniti and Davis Wallon were sharp though the first three.  Van Heyst then pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, fanning four.  Cipri came on to record the final out and send the Warriors on to the double elimination phase as the number two seed in Pool B.
