Wilton District 10s Pummel Darien National 16-5

Warrior bats feast on Darien pitching with an 18 hit onslaught

Wilton’s 10 year old baseball team kicked off pool play in the District tourney with a 16-5 five inning mercy-rule pummeling of Darien National on Friday at the Wilton Family Y.  The young Warriors dominated every facet of the game in their first taste of District 1 competition.

Batting first after losing the coin toss, the Warriors has an inauspicious start going down 1-2-3.  Darien managed one hit against starting pitcher Everett Andersen, but did not score.  The pitcher’s duel did not last long.

The Warriors put up a big crooked number in the second, plating five.   Andersen and Ryan Sorbo both singled in front of Kevin Hyzy’s booming triple to left center.  Brian Cipri, Eli Ackerman and Ryan van Heyst also drove in runs during the inning.

The Warriors turned their first of two double plays during the game in the second as A.J. Preisano snagged a liner and threw a perfect strike to first to double off the Darien baserunner.

After adding one on a Kevin Hyzy sacrifice fly to make the score 6-0 in the top of the third, Darien managed to score three times in the bottom half  to narrow the gap, but not for long.

The Warriors scored twice in the fourth, on a big hit by Ryan Johnson, and then exploded for eight runs in the fifth as Anthony Passaniti led off with a titanic home run to deep center.  Craig Hyzy, van Heyst, Strazza, Sorbo, Johnson, Davis Wallon and E.J. Fasano all had hits in the fifth in addition to Passaniti, who had two in the inning.

While Darien scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, the mercy rule was invoked with Wilton up by eleven.

In all, Wilton’s offensive onslaught of eighteen hits, solid pitching, and terrific defense, including a 1-6-3 double play from Strazza to van Heyst to Passaniti, buried Darien.
