Waiting for a Change of Heart: It Just Takes a Beat to Turn it Around

The Wilton YMCA is hosting a Change of Heart Awareness Event on Friday February 28t, 2014 from 9:00am -12:00pm.  Change of Heart is a grass roots program, presented by SELF magazine that was created to educate women about heart disease, make them aware of their personal risk and motivate them to improve their overall health through volunteer organized fitness events.

According to the American Heart Association, Heart Disease is the #1 killer of women and kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.  In fact, cardiovascular disease kills more women than men and heart disease affects women of ALL ethnicities. Just as important, American Heart Association specifically points out that heart attack symptoms in women can differ from the more “classic” symptoms experienced by men.

Athletic, in-shape and with no family history of heart disease, Wilton resident Nancy Capelle is lucky to be alive.  One week after her 40th birthday, she not only suffered a heart attack, but also survived cardiac arrest.  Now the Founder of Cardiac Companion, LLC.  “It is vital for all women, regardless of age or risk factors that heart disease is a real threat.  Through education, focus on diet and exercise and awareness of the symptoms of a heart attack, women can empower themselves to save their own lives.  I can’t stress enough that there is no “stereotypical” individual who can have a heart attack.  However, one thing applies to everyone - If you suspect you're having a heart attack, call for emergency medical help immediately,” says Nancy.

With awareness, education and care, most heart disease can be prevented. Change of Heart works to do just that!  The Wilton YMCA is proud to offer the following program on February 28th:

  • 8:30-12:00 pm: Free blood pressure screening and recruitment into the Taking Control of Healthier Hearts Program/ Nutrition Screening with Loryn Galardi
  • 8:30-9:30 am:   Body Pump with Liz - Studio I
  • 9:00-10:30 am:  Zumba Party with James - Gym
  • 10:45-11:30 am:  “Happy 40th Birthday: Enjoy Your Heart Attack” presented by Nancy Capelle
  • 11:30-12:00 pm: Meditation & Breath with Fran - Studio 2

Change of Heart is a great way for women to become educated about the risks for heart disease and what actions they can take to minimize their risk of developing it.

“The heart is an incredibly complex organ we take for granted because it beats 60-100 times per minutes, 24 hours per day, without us even having to think about it,” says Capelle.  “Don’t wait to find out first-hand how important your heart is – make the necessary changes in your life now and turn the beat around.”
