Terri Vitti, 51; Veteran Stamford Police Sergeant

Theresa Ann Czarnecki Vitti, passed away on March 4, 2014, at Stamford Hospital following a long battle with cancer. She was 51.

Terri was born in Stamford, on Oct. 29, 1962, the daughter of Margaret Aylward Czarnecki and the late Edward Czarnecki.

Terri attended Stamford High School and earned an Associate's Degree from Norwalk Community College. She then continued her education and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Phoenix.

Beginning in April 1985 Terri joined the Stamford Police Department and was promoted to sergeant in January 2002. Terri was assigned to several positions within the Police Department including Patrol, Youth Bureau, Communications, Internal Affairs, Street Narcotics (COPE), Street Crime Unit and most recently, as the supervisor for the Records Retention Division. Terri remained an active member of the department at the time of her death. Terri's husband, Mark, is also an active member of the Stamford Police Department.

Terri received many awards and letters of recognition during her time as a police officer. Terri was known affectionately by her co-workers and people she knew on the street as "Big Red" for her flowing red hair.

Terri's passions included playing softball, horses and vacationing in the Adirondacks of upstate New York.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her sister Catherine Czarnecki of Park City, UT and a brother, Tommy Asbury of Shawnee, OK.

Calling hours will be at the Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home, 267 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich, from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 7. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Leo Parish, 24 Roxbury Rd., Stamford, at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8.
