End of summer celebrations take shape in many forms. Some families take a long weekend get-a-way, others host backyard picnics, while still others represent Labor Day by taking a day of rest from work, which includes not cooking.
Here's a simple and easy guide to assist you in throwing a laid back, yet elegant Labor Day Soirée that will allow you to relax and enjoy the last few glorious days of summer.
The décor~
Go monochromatic with various shades of white for linens. Use hints of earthy, beachy colors such as greens and blues for a calm, soothing effect.
Pick up fresh summer blooms for your centerpieces at Stewart Flowers located next to the Village Market. Various shades of white lilies, Queen Anne's lace, and Stewart's "best roses in town", make stunning centerpieces.
Open House gifts on Center Street offers a line of outdoor dinner wear made of melamine that is perfect for outdoor entertaining. Thick plastic martini and margarita glasses, one of a kind table toppers, and an eclectic mix of home décor offered at Open House will make your party the talk of the town.
Don't' forget the lighting. Candles placed in groups of three make lovely mood lighting. Open House has a selection of various candles and holders.
For 100 percent soy candles, stop by The Guilded Nest in Ridgefield. Located at the corner of Routes 7 and 102, this little shop has something old, something new, something fun, and something funky for great conversation starters.
Check stores for special Labor Day hours.
The music~
Classical guitar, soft jazz, or even a little reggae music sets the mood for summer fun. Music soothes the savage beast and what better way to unwind then with some mellow sounds.
Pick up CD's at your local retailer.
The cocktails~
Nothing screams sophistication like martinis. And with all the trendy, hip new concoctions, a make-your-own-martini bar can be a fun conversation starter.
Swank Martini has dozens and dozens of martini recipes online such as the Tutti Fruitti, Sexy Devil, and She Walks in Beauty martini. Try one of their recipes by clicking here or have fun making up your own concoctions.
How about making one up called the Worldly Wiltonian? Or the Urbane Suburbanite? If it's a success feel free to share the recipe under the comments section.
Be sure to have some wine on hand for those who decline the martinis. Pick up a nice light summer white at Ancona's Wine Shop.
The hors d'oeuvres ~
Pick up simple appetizers at the Village Market such as shrimp cocktail, pate, cheese, fruit, and crackers, thin sliced roast beef with horseradish, and many other fabulous finger foods.
Check with your local caterer to see what offering they can prepare for your summertime soiree.
Bon Appétit and Michelina's both offer scrumptious delicacies that will please your partiers' palettes.
The games~
Cards are always a fun thing to play but try going for something a little different. The local toy store offers unique games meant for kids that can be fun for adults as well. Trivia games can be played without a board. A favorite of ours is a new game by the makers of the popular game Cranium that is called Yamodo.
The outfit~
Take advantage of the "End of Summer" sales that are so popular this time of year.
Comfortable, yet elegant attire can be found at Une Minette, located at 5 River Road in downtown Wilton. This fashion boutique for women and men carries clothing, hand-made jewelry form local artists, shoes, handbags, and other accessories.
Also offering unique fashion is B Chic located next to Stewart Flowers and the Village Market. Their shop offers the latest designer clothing for women and teens.
Now that all of your ducks are in a row, metaphorically speaking, you are all set to have the sophisticated and superb summertime soiree!
Happy Labor Day!
