Ramsey Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity

Judges Richard Comerford, Bruce Hudock and William Wenzel reportedly found the 22-year-old Wilton resident not guilty of murder, third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny.

A three-judge panel on Wednesday reportedly found 22-year-old Aaron Ramsey not guilty by reason of insanity for the murder of his 73-year-old father, Edward Ramsey, in their Wilton home in May.

According to a report in The Hour of Norwalk, Judges Richard Comerford, Bruce Hudock and William Wenzel found Ramsey not guilty of murder, third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny.

During a hearing last month at state Superior Court in Stamford psychiatrist Justin Schechter testified that Ramsey—who has been free on bond but hospitalized in a state mental health facility—was having a psychotic episode when when he bludgeoned and stabbed his father to death, and was therefore "unable to understand the wrongfulness of his actions."

During that hearing State's Attorney Richard Colangelo said Ramsey—who has a history of mental health and substance abuse issues—was facing 25 to 60 years in Whiting hospital or a similar treatment facility, which he described as being tantamount to a prison sentence.

However Schechter testified that Ramsey's rate of recovery was almost impossible to determine, since it depends on how well he responds to treatment.

Adding to the unpredictability of his recovery, Schechter said, is the fact that Ramsey will now also have to deal with the trauma of having lost his father.
