Police: Dog Breed in Wilton Mauling was American Staffordshire Terrier

Contrary to some media reports that the dog in the Wilton mauling was not a pit bull, Wilton Police say the dog was an American Staffordshire Terrier, which falls into the "pit bull" category.

Wilton Police have confirmed the breed of the dog involved in the mauling of Anne Murray on Nov. 11.

Contrary to some media reports that the dog was not a pit bull, the dog in the incident at 77 Range Road which belonged to the victim's sons, Ian and Matthew Murray, was an American Staffordshire Terrier, which is one of several breeds that fall into the category of "pit bull."

"When we got the records of the vet they'd taken the dog to, it was referred to as a pit bull and I don't think that is inaccurate," said Lt. Wakeman of Wilton Police.

According to Lt. Wakeman, after the dog's head was initially tested for rabies, there was an initial examination at a local veterinary hospital, which he declined to identify. Subsequent to that examination, the dog's body is being subject to additional testing and that a necropsy is being performed on the dog at a facility in the state, which he declined to specify.

"We don't know when the results will be available, to see if there was any type of foreign substance ingested," Wakeman said.

Wakeman described the two-year old dog as healthy and said that it weighed approximately 65 lbs. "It appeared to be in good shape and there were no obvious signs of mistreatment. There were nothing on the property to indicate fighting or that the dog was being trained for fighting," Wakeman said.

Wakeman also said that Wilton Police have not yet had a chance to interview Anne Murray, tough they did travel to the hospital twice last week hoping to speak to her and that she is out of intensive care.
