Woman Drives Past Road Closure Sign, Crashes into Tree

Police say a Wilton driver crashed head-on into a tree on Thursday.

A 49-year-old Wilton woman was charged with failure to obey a sign after she allegedly traveled around a “Road Closed Ahead” barricade and police caution tape on Belden Hill Road and crashed head-on into a tree blocking the roadway.

According to police, Elizabeth Ambargis, of Silver Spring Lane, was heading south on Belden Hill Road on Jan. 31 at 6:35 a.m. when she crossed the barricade near the intersection of Seir Hill Road. Police said she saw a Department of Public Works worker there and yelled, according to a witness.

Ambargis told police she didn’t see any caution tape, police said.

“We have a problem with people driving through barricaded areas,” Captain John Lynch said. “It just ties up manpower.”
