Boucher: NYC Mayoral Election an Opportunity for a New CT Governor to Attract Jobs

In response to the election of Bill de Blasio as the new mayor of New York City, State Sen. Toni Boucher issued the following statement:

"It has been nearly 20 years since New York City has had a Democratic mayor. The last one's tenure was marred by high crime rates, high taxes, high debt, and high unemployment. Many fear that the newly elected mayor will reverse the policies of the two recent Republican administrations that were tough on crime, revived the job market, and increased housing demand to historic levels. Most accept that the Giuliani and Bloomberg administrations transformed one of the nation's most dangerous cities into one of the safest and most desirable -- even in the wake of September 11, a disaster that could have paralyzed the city for years.

A shift away from the Republican policies that produced a vibrant economy and robust job growth in New York could be a boon for Connecticut. However, under the Malloy administration Connecticut has become increasingly unfriendly to business, raised its unemployment rate, and sunk to the bottom of every economic ranking. It seems likely that New York City's new mayor will also adopt strong anti-business policies. Our state will have an extraordinary opportunity to attract large numbers of New York businesses if it elects a new governor who will make dramatic changes by lowering the cost and high regulatory hurdles for business, a governor who believes that business growth is good for everyone and that making a profit produces jobs."

State Senator Toni Boucher represents the 26th district. She has formed an exploratory committee for the opportunity to run for governor.
