Meeting Jane Nelsen....THE Positive Discipline Guru!

I admit, I was a groupie of many bands growing up.  I even had "Marmaduke" from the New Riders of the Purple Sage sign a t-shirt of theirs that I bought less than 10 years ago.  I am now a Jane Nelsen groupie.  Last week, I had the amazing pleasure of having dinner with Jane and Teresa LaSala, the woman who trained me as a Certified Parent Educator of Positive Discipline.  I then heard her speak to a group of about 70 parents of pre-schoolers, and finally had a few more hours just to sit and chat.  Wow, was this ever a dream come true!

Jane is as real and honest of a person as you would expect her to be.  She is Positive Discipline throughout.  She speaks from her heart, with loving kindness.  One of my favorite things she said was, "When I was too permissive, I hated my kids.  When I was too firm, I hated myself."  She explained that one of the basic concepts of Positive Discipline is to be kind and firm at the same time.  She shared that mistakes are wonderful opportunities to learn, and that she is always learning from them.  She talked about how important it is to build relationships with your children, and to connect first - validate their feelings, hug one another, listen more than talking - and then to help them problem solve.

Jane will be speaking March 22 from 8:45-11:45 at Parent Empowerment University in Newtown.  You can register at newtownparentconnection.org.  Spaces are filling up fast!  I hope you, too, will experience Jane in person!

If you would like to learn more about the Positive Discipline model which helps build connections and relationships, and how to raise respectful, resourceful and responsible children, check out our upcoming introductory and 6-week class schedule at www.positivedisciplinewesternct.org.   .
