AP: Obama Would Curtail Summer Vacation

The Associated Press reports the President is considering adding significant time to the school calendar.

Much to many students' chagrin, but perhaps to the benefit of their test scores, it looks as if both the school day and the school year could be set to increase.

With two school-age children of his own, President Obama believes that more time in school could aid children's learning potential and stave off problems that typically occur off school grounds, especially in poorer families, including hunger and decreased parental involvement.

"Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas," the president said to the AP earlier this year. "Not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, and probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom."
