April Vacation Subject to Cancellation for all Wilton Schools

Only three school cancellations are now allotted for under the Board's calendar plan; more than that, and spring break will be shortened.

Last night, the Board of Education voted unanimously to chip away at April vacation if more than three snow days (or any school cancelations) occur.

The calendar is at their last regularly scheduled board meeting.

“Regardless if people like or don’t like what we do…they need to plan,” said Superintendent of Schools Gary Richards.

State officials “are in no way interested in granting a waiver for this,” Richards said, referring to a rumor that in the case of emergencies, the state legislature would allow schools to have less than 180 days of school—which is untrue.

The last day of school is set for June 20 because of a caused by Tropical Storm Irene. If there is one snow day, the school year will be extended to June 21; another snow day extends it to the June 22.  If there is a third snow day, the school year will be reduced from 181 to 180 snow days, the state minimum requirement. The last day of school will then remain on Friday, June 22.

If more snow days are needed, then April 16, the first day of spring break, will be made a school day. If necessary, further eliminations of vacation days will coincide with the number of cancellations used. Under the plan, a total of eight snow days would wipe out spring break completely.

A revised school calendar, likely with a bolded statement indicating that April vacation is subject to cancellation, will be available on the school’s website shortly.

Aside from the board, the meeting was sparsley attended, and there was no public comment made before the vote was cast.

This article has been corrected to show that the last day of school in the instance of three snow days will remain on Friday, June 22; it will not be June 23, which is a Saturday, as previously reported.
