Education Union Advises Longer School Days & Years

The Connecticut Education Association wants to see full-day kindergarten, expanded preschool programs and better accountability in 2012.

The Connecticut Education Association, a union that represents over 41,000 teachers in the state, released on Tuesday their recommendations for education reform in 2012, which include changes to tenure and dismissal rules and the way state funds are dispersed among local districts, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The report, which is called "View from a Classroom," includes two proposals that match Gov. Malloy's plan for improving the state's public school system — expanded support for preschool programs and . In addition, the union is looking to make both the school day and year longer to ensure that reading proficiency among students is met by the third grade.

And while  that he wants to increase the use of performance-based accountability for  throughout the state, the union argued in the report against using test scores as the primary measure of performance among teachers. According to CBS News, the union's report doesn't support  altogether, but instead wants to see teachers evaluated on a yearly basis and given the opportunity to improve.
