Auditory Processing Disorders: Mysteries and Misconceptions

What is auditory processing? How are auditory processing issues identified and remediated? How is auditory processing related to language and learning? There are many questions about auditory processing, as well as confusion in the use of terminology – auditory processing, language processing, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This complex topic needs to be better understood if parents and teachers are to meet the day-to-day needs of children who have listening, learning, and/or language problems related to aspects of processing. Lydia H. Soifer, Ph.D., a language pathologist with over 35 years’ experience in clinical and private practice and university teaching, will provide up-to-date information to help parents be more informed advocates for their children. Dr. Soifer is the Director of the Soifer Center for Learning and Child Development, a multidisciplinary diagnostic, remedial and advocacy setting of psychologists, language and speech pathologists, special educators, reading teachers, parent trainers, and advocates. She is Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and faculty member in the Early Intervention Training Institute, both at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In 1998 Dr. Soifer was appointed the Executive Director of the Children’s Development and Education Foundation (renamed the Best Children’s Foundation). She has consulted with many public and private schools across the country, authored a chapter on the relationship of oral language to literacy for a textbook now in its third edition, and created the language assessment portion of a software product, WordWeaver for Speech and Language Assessment. 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at West Rocks Middle School (in the auditorium), 81 West Rocks Road, Norwalk, CT.
