Friday Foodies Fabulous Family Fare

Trackside Teen Center, Wilton Continuing Education and Now You're Cookin! have teamed up to present the cooking classes. On the second Friday of each month, beginning January 14, 2011, Trackside will be transformed into a cooking school, complete with a commercial kitchen, grill, and top-shelf ingredients. Cooking workshops for adults run from noon to 2 p.m.. Cooking classes for teens begin at 3:30 p.m. and end at 5 p.m.

"This is another great program to offer where the whole family benefits," said Mark Ketley, director of Trackside. "It's a perfect fit, especially since Trackside is part of the Wilton Alliance for a Healthier Community."

In the adult cooking classes, participants will learn tips and techniques, and discover fun and funky ingredients as they cook meals from scratch that appeal to the whole family, said Carol Dannhauser, who leads the workshops. She is a cook and family-food expert and the editor of Cooking Teens magazine. She produces the TV series Now You're Cookin!

"This is a great class for folks who are interesting and adventurous but tend to be less adventurous in the kitchen because they're skittish about making new foods for their families," she said. "These classes will teach them how to cook mouth-watering, interesting, meals that happen to be healthy and appealing."

Adult classes include: Contemporary Mexican (January 14), Now That's Italian (February 11), Tableful of Tapas (March 11), American Favorites with a Twist (April 8), and Farm-to-Table Favorites (May 13). Adult workshops include lunch and a glass of wine.

In the classes for teens, students gather around the kitchen and learn how to cook food from scratch that tastes great and happens to be healthy. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks. You name it, teens make it – and eat it. Participants make a different creation each month. In addition to teaching cooking, Dannhauser fills teens in on secrets of how TV chefs make meals happen.

People are looking for new ways to prepare meals. They're tired of making the same old things and ordering take-out. Give the gift of discovering how easy it can be to create great meals together, said Dolores Tufariello, Coordinator of Wilton Continuing Education.
