Got Stress? 7 Steps to Reduce Your Symptoms

According to the American Psychology Association, stress is taking a toll on people, contributing to health problems, poor relationships and lost productivity at work. Heart disease, type-II diabetes, cancer, respiratory disorders, and health issues associated with overweight and obesity are categorized as chronic diseases.

These illnesses, along with pain and depression, annually cost this country $1.58 trillion in healthcare costs. These stats from the 2008 Almanac of Chronic Diseases also states that these health problems are the result of poor food choices, and an unhealthful lifestyle, one of them being stress.

Working properly, the body’s stress response enhances a person’s ability to perform well under pressure. But the stress response can also cause problems when it fails to turn off!.  When that happens, we can develop health problems and symptoms associated with stress.

Learning to manage stress is a lot more important than finding a way to mask it. Covering up stress with a crutch (i.e., alcohol, medications, and destructive behaviors) to alleviate the outward symptoms will do little to help the situation get better.
