New Haven Register: Strap 'Em In

The New Haven Register ponders the efficacy of a statewide seat belt requirement on school buses.

The New Haven Register begins its story with a young student in Hartford telling his somber tale about watching his friend die in a school bus accident.

It is not a pretty picture.

The student, Sameer Laul, was recounting the event to members of the state's Transportation Committee as they consider about the twentieth statewide school bus seat belt mandate in the last twenty years. Past requests have failed because of cost concerns, with the Register estimating the cost of installation of belts on buses at somewhere between "$200 million and $500 million statewide."

Wilton is among only four towns in Connecticut that require seat belts currently, along with Danbury, Redding and Cromwell.
