Skin Rash Afflicts Some Greenwich High School Athletes

The breakout of a skin rash among members of Greenwich High School athletic teams is prompting a cleaning of athletic facilities and equipment, according a school official.

In a memo emailed to parents on Thursday, Sept. 19, GHS Headmaster Chris Winters said, "Over the past couple of weeks, several students who participate on athletic teams have developed a skin rash and we have had one confirmed case of a skin infection. In all cases, the rash or infection has been treated and the students have been allowed to return to school and athletic events."

In the email, Winters explained, "We are working closely with the GHS Health Department and with the Town Health Department. As a precaution, we have arranged for a team of professional cleaners to thoroughly clean all team rooms and athletic equipment this weekend, including athletic gear (helmets, chin straps, etc.). We are asking our athletes to take all athletic clothing (e.g., uniforms, under garments, towels) home for washing."

Winters told Greenwich Patch in an email, "The issue is currently quite small. There are 6 or 7 students who have presented to us with a rash. We are being extra cautious and having the rooms cleaned thoroughly in addition to the normal daily cleaning." He did not identify the professional company hired to clean the facilities or the cost.

Winters did not say which teams the athletes are members or detail when the rash cases were first reported or if it was identified.

In his note to parents, Winters also said, "If your child develops a skin rash, please have him or her see our nurses at GHS or visit a medical professional. All students should keep abrasions covered and clean. We will have our staff speaking with all teams about proper hygiene at practices (Thursday)."
