In announcing the appointment of Timothy Canty as assistant superintendent for secondary education after the Board of Education met Wednesday evening, Superintendent Stephen Falcone also wrote:

I also wanted to update you on the status of the DHS Principal search.  We have had a number of strong candidates apply, and we continue to be in the process of investigating the potential of each to serve in this important role.  I will keep you updated as to the status of the search.

Here is the news release:

The Darien Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools, Stephen V. Falcone, are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Timothy Canty as Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education in the Darien Public Schools.  He will assume the role currently held by Mr. Matthew Byrnes, who will become the Headmaster of Wooster School on July 1, 2013.

Timothy Canty has been a lifelong educator, serving most recently as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction (K-12) in the Wilton, CT Public Schools.   In that role, Mr. Canty was centrally involved in district initiatives including the adoption of a new K-8 mathematics program, development of 21st century technology skills into the curriculum, efforts to align curriculum with the Common Core State Standards, and implementation of an expanded Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop model in the district.

He has provided district leadership in developing the instructional data team process, expanding teachers’ access to online curriculum mapping tools, and redesigning the professional development plan.

Tim has been acknowledged as a visionary who is highly responsive and supportive to the needs of all constituents.  It was noted that he is a “systemic thinker who quickly makes the required connections between vision, process, … and student achievement.”   Prior to his assuming the role of Assistant Superintendent, Tim was the Principal of Wilton High School from 2004-2011.

Interestingly, Tim Canty began his teaching career in the Darien Public Schools where he taught at Royle School as well as Middlesex Middle School between 1980 and 1987.  He then served as a teacher, team leader, and department leader at Cider Mill School and Middlebrook Middle School in Wilton from 1987-1998.

During this period, Mr. Canty coached varsity basketball at Wilton High School.  Tim did move to the high school where he was a Dean of Students and Associate Principal before becoming Principal in 2004.

Tim Canty earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education (with a concentration in Mathematics) from the University of Connecticut with Summa cum Laude honors.

He received a Master of Arts in Secondary Mathematics Education as well as a 6th Year Degree in Special Education from Fairfield University.  He has done additional coursework in administration at Sacred Heart and the University of Connecticut, particularly in the Executive Leadership Program.

Professionally, Mr. Canty has been active in the Tri-State Consortium and recently served as coordinator of the Wilton visit to examine their K-12 Language Arts Program.  He formerly served as Chair of the High School Board of Control for the Connecticut Association of Schools.

Mr. Canty resides in Southbury.

He will begin his duties on July 1, 2013.
